Tom & Robert Stewart Claim Burton Week 2016 In Final Day Shakeup
The final day of the Gul National 12 Burton Week 2016 brought a change of pace and a big shake up on the leaderboard. Going into the day John and Ollie Meadowcroft from Upper Thames SC had the upper hand with a four point lead over Tom and Robert Stewart from Waldringfield SC. Just four points separated third to sixth place with Steve Sallis and Katy Meadowcroft from Hykeham SC third on 9 points, Nick Copsey and Steve Carver from Stokes Bay SC fourth on 10 points and Graham Camm and Zoe Hartley and Jeremy and Luke Hartley tied on 12 points for fifth and sixth.
After the strong winds of the preceding days it was all change for the last day with a lovely light breeze and flat seas. The Brightlingsea Sailing Club race committee led by Dave Charlton were able to run two races, races five and six, to complete the series. The change of pace brought some new faces to the front of the fleet and produced a big shake up in the results.
John and Ollie Meadowcroft’s day got off to a disastrous start with a 21st which immediately became their discard. Up at the front of the fleet Tom and Robert Stewart won the race with Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne second, Gavin Willis and Toby Dawkins third, Kevin lies and Andrea Downham fourth, Jeremy and Luke Hartley fifth and Steve Sallis and Katy Meadowcroft sixth.
As they lined up for what was to be the final race John and Ollie Meadowcroft and Tom and Robert Stewart were now neck and neck on nine points apiece. Five points back sat Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne in third, a single point ahead of Steve Sallis and Katy Meadowcroft.
It was to be a nail biting conclusion to the regatta, but with the wind down John and Ollie Meadowcroft just couldn’t seem to get the same traction they’d had in the breeze and had to be content with a seventh place. Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne meanwhile where on the top of their game, taking the final race from Tom and Robert Stewart with Kevin Iles and Andrea Downham fourth and the Hartleys fifth.
Once the final calculations were made Tom and Rogert Stewart were confirmed as the 2016 Gul National Twelve Burton Week winners by a four point margin from Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne with John and Ollie Meadowcroft taking the final step on the podium.
